Work Values of Indian Managers
The phenomenon of contradiction has always intrigued the human mind. We cannot accept something to be true and false at the same time.
This was formally recognized by Aristotle through the law of contradiction. In almost all disciplines and a very large part of our day-to-day living, we take the law of contradiction for granted. This makes it very difficult for us to explore the world of contradiction itself, and prevent us from exploring that part of our consciousness where, at least some contradictions could coexist.
An individual's perceptions and the crucial choices he makes and how he makes them in different situations are greatly influenced by his personal values. The study of personal values, therefore, provides an important and useful means of understanding human behaviour.
It is only since the last decade that the social scientists have increasingly come to rely upon the study of values to understand the managerial behaviour. However, there are not many studies on the values of Indian Managers.
Values and Their Significance
Values represent basic convictions that "a specific mode of conduct or end-state of existence is personally or socially preferable to an opposite or converse mode of conduct or end-state of existence." They contain a judgmental element in that they carry an individual's ideas as to what is right, good, or desirable.
Values have both content and intensity attributes. The content attribute says that a mode of conduct or end-state of existence is important. The intensity attribute specifies how important it is. When we rank an individual's values in terms of their intensity, we obtain that person's value system.
The Indian Context
Indian managers operate within a unique cultural context that shapes their value systems in distinctive ways. Traditional Indian values emphasize collectivism, hierarchy, and relationship orientation, which can sometimes create tension with modern corporate values that prioritize efficiency, competition, and individual achievement.
These values influence how Indian managers approach decision-making, leadership, conflict resolution, and organizational structures. Understanding these value orientations provides crucial insights into the behavior and effectiveness of Indian management approaches in both domestic and global contexts.
Research Implications
The study of work values among Indian managers has significant implications for organizational development, leadership training, and cross-cultural management. By recognizing the unique value patterns that emerge in the Indian business context, organizations can develop more effective strategies for talent management, organizational change, and international collaboration.
This research area remains vital as Indian businesses continue to expand globally and as multinational corporations seek to establish stronger footholds in the Indian market. The intersection of traditional values with modern business practices creates a rich field for ongoing research and practical application.
